Is there a reason for a woman to have to fill her bladder for a second trimester prenatal ultrasound?
In the hospital where I work, the Rad techs are requesting that women having a prenatal ultrasound arrive with full bladders, even if they are in their second trimester. The uterus should have lifted out of the pelvis and be visible by this point in the pregnancy. We have been having patient complaints because they are uncomfortable during the ultrasound. Is there any reason for the rad techs to be requesting this?
It’s just standard procedure. Both my prenatal ultrasounds have been done at approx. 20 weeks, and the full-bladder request is a given. And YES, it is VERY uncomfortable!
Apparently (from what I’ve been told) the full bladder “squishes” the uterus … flattens it out, kinda … and makes it easier to “see” the fetus.
All well and good, I say … but forgive me if I pee on the exam table! OK, my youngest child is 12, so I’m a bit removed from all that, but I can well remember those ultrasounds, and the feeling that I was absolutely gonna DIE if I couldn’t pee right that very instant!
