At 11 weeks with my fourth pregnancy, I used the same doppler and found the heartbeat within the first minute! It’s all about placement… and luck! Depending on where the baby is and how your placenta lies and a number of different factors, your best bet is to place the wand just above the pubic bone. Use plenty of gel (about the size of a quarter), and SLOWLY tilt the wand from side to side, while at the same time moving from left to right above the pubic bone. Hope that made sense! Be patient, if you don’t find it within the first five minutes, try again later. I found my baby’s heart rate quickly the first time, but with subsequent tries, it sometimes took longer.

The numbers on the screen do jump around a bit. Sometimes it will pick up your heartbeat, sometimes it will combine your and the baby’s heartbeat and sometimes it will start to pick up a heartbeat (yours or baby’s) and then drop it… it can be annoying! But, when you get a lock on your baby’s heart, you will know. The baby’s heart rate is kind of fast in the beginning, my daughter’s was 175-180 at 11 weeks and slowed down around 145 before birth. If you’ve never heard a baby’s heartbeat via doppler, to better let you know what to listen for, try finding it on youtube.

Good luck! I had so much fun with my doppler and wish I would have had one with all my pregnancies! They can be a pain, but just be patient. Maybe you can take the doppler with you to your next OB appointment and get a few tips on placement.
